MERCYME BELIEVES IN THE WELFARE OF CHILDREN
The right of children must be respected, because children are vulnerable and need a voice. Unfortunately in too many countries, people don’t respect the rights of children, but instead abuse their rights for awful purposes by some authority figure. They are raped, enslaved, used for forced labor, child prostitution, sex objects and child soldiers engaged in armed conflicts.
SIERRA LEONE
Sierra Leone is located on the Atlantic coast in West Africa. The general population is 5 million. Sierra Leone gained its independence in 1961 from British rule. The country enjoyed peace and stability until in 1991 a war broke out initiated by a group called Revolutionary United Front (RUF) under Foday Sankoh. Tens of thousands died and more than 2 million people were displaced. In 2001 the war came to a stop and presently, the country is undergoing a rehabilitation process.
